Our worship is based on a weekly round of services. These are the Mass or Eucharist and the Daily Office, the services of Morning and Evening Prayer. These vary according to the seasons of the Christian Year.
This is a said Mass using the traditional Scottish Liturgy (1970) and it lasts about half an hour.
This is a Sung Mass using the 1982 Scottish Liturgy and with music led by our choir. It usually lasts just over an hour and is followed by coffee in the Chapter House. Children are very welcome, to sit with their parents, to wander about, to pray in their own way, and the Lady Chapel is available as a break-out space. Baptised Christians of all ages are invited to receive Holy Communion.
This is sung by our choir using the timeless words of the Scottish Book of Common Prayer. Everyone is welcome to attend this service of glorious music and prayerful reflection, please visit the music page to discover about music for evensong and other services. A simple, peaceful service of prayer, silence and song, inspired by the worship of the Taizé Community in France. This contemplative service offers an opportunity to step away from the busyness of life and rest in God’s presence tthrough meditative chants, Scripture, periods of silence and gentle prayer, we create space for reflection, renewal and a deepening of faith. Sometimes Taizé Prayer is on a different Sunday in the month, check the Cathedral website and social media.
A group of us gather to pray the rosary, and help is given to those not used to this type of prayer. The holy rosary is a powerful gateway to contemplation. It is praying together with Mary, Jesus' Mother, and meditating on the central mysteries of the Christian faith as we say simple prayers.
This is a contemplative said Mass in the Lady Chapel using the 1982 Scottish Liturgy. It usually lasts half an hour.
This Healing Service is a said Mass in the Lady Chapel using the 1982 Scottish Liturgy with optional prayers for healing and a chance to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. It usually lasts about half an hour.
These offices use a shortened form of the Scottish Prayer Book offices of Mattins and Evensong and are partly sung in Gregorian Chant. All are welcome, but on some days it will not be possible so please contact the Provost or the office to confirm dates.
Worship helps us go deeper into the Mystery of Christ. We celebrate important days and seasons in the Christian calendar with special services and rituals. The Christian year transforms us by helping us enter into the life of Jesus Christ. There are three main parts:
The seasons of Lent and Easter, centred on the Paschal Mystery: the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ
The seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, centred on the Incarnation: God becoming human in Christ
During the rest of the year, before Lent and after Pentecost, we meditate on this great Mystery of Christ.
This is not a season but throughout the year there are also the feasts of the saints and other themes. May is Mary’s month, in September’s Season of Creation we reflect on our beautiful but endangered world, and in November, as the leaves fall, we pray for the dead.
